Well argued and cogent. There is also the strong possibility we ought not to judge absolutely. Over the long arc of time economic trends develop that shift winners and losers. The industrial revolution came late to everyone but Britain. Judged during the 1880's, the rest of Europe looked backwards. By WWII the U.S. dominated. Choose your time horizon and you choose your winners.
