“I desire pleasure. I am not a revolutionary by principle. I was educated in an entirely different manner. I don’t paint things. I only paint the difference between things.” — Henri Matisse

Terroir/ter’wa/noun

1. Derived from the Latin word ‘terra,’ meaning earth

2. The particular environment in which the grapes were grown.

3. The unique character of a wine made from the same grape and grown within a football field of another vineyard.

(Cambridge English Dictionary)

What did Henri Matisse discover in Collioure?

Was it merely a scenic backdrop for his paintings? Or was there something more — a nourishment for the senses and insight into the depths of desire? Undoubtedly, it was all of the above.

Even today, as the sun sets over Languedoc, one can peer through empty picture frames and witness the same captivating views that enthralled Matisse a century ago. What were once humble fishing villages, dependent on the anchovy trade for survival, have now transformed into rich repositories of history. From ancient Roman ruins to medieval castles and cathedrals, the passage of time has seen the vineyards flourish and evolve. However, this transformation was not a mere accident or the whims of nature; it was the result of the toil of countless individuals, the courage of many, and the fervent passion of one.

The phenomenon, however, extends far beyond the vineyards or the boundaries of southern France. It possesses the power to be life-changing and transformative for all people, just as it is for grapes that yield exquisite wines lining the shelves of your local wine merchant. This is the revelation that Matisse unearthed — the realization that the power of place holds the key to unlocking full potential and enhancing our existence.

Matisse discovered terroir.

Picture yourself standing amid tidy vineyards where endless rows of grapes stretch as far as the eye can see. However, not all vineyards are created equal. Only a select few hold the prestigious title of “grand crus,” representing the pinnacle of winemaking. And what sets them apart — a symphony of soul and soil that bestows distinctive flavors and character upon the grapes.

The name for this phenomenon, translated from French by way of Latin, is “terra,” which means the dirt from which all life springs. Yet, as the Cambridge English Dictionary illuminates, Terroir encompasses far more. It embodies the alchemy of past and present, intertwined in a delicate dance that imparts flavors and characteristics that are unique to those sweet and sour species we call people. Those who grow in one vineyard can be easily distinguished from their brethren a mere stone’s throw away.

In the cryptic words of Baron Le Roy, the mystique of terroir is rather simple. And much like life itself, it holds the secret to why we are essentially different from others largely because of the toil and expertise of older generations — the human equivalents of vignerons and grape pickers — suggesting that the notion we are bound to be the product of our DNA is as true as a great wine is the product of a plot of dirt. Terroir is the secret ingredient that transforms grapes into a work of art, and terroir will have the same effect on the human variety.

Just as terroir has the ability to elevate grapes into something truly remarkable, it sparked our curiosity to explore whether this phenomenon has a similar impact on humans. It’s fascinating to consider that we share a significant portion of our make up with those delightful little purple and green spheres. If at the end of our journey, life is likened to a vintage of a particular varietal, the lessons and experiences of terroir can guide us towards becoming a “bottle” of higher quality, occupying a prestigious shelf, commanding greater value, and ultimately enjoying a refined existence in a crystal goblet rather than brown paper bags.

The impact of terroir goes far beyond the conventional factors often attributed to success, such as inherited talents, DNA, and family wealth. It even surpasses the influence of intellect alone.

The Terroir Effect encompasses the intertwining of applied learning, the spirit of our time, and the prevailing ethos, which enhance and shape us as individuals. A prime example is Marie Curie. While she possessed exceptional intelligence that would have made her a formidable teacher in any terroir and era, it was in the terroir of 19th century egalitarian France that she flourished, ultimately becoming a two-time Nobel Prize laureate. The Curie family’s collective achievements, with a total of five Nobel Prizes, establish France during her time as the most celebrated Nobel Terroir in history.

Despite the claims of self-help bromides about seven habits or outliers who achieve extraordinary success due to fortunate timing and circumstance, our research reveals that the concept of place emerges as a paramount factor. Whether it began in one’s home, our original terroirs, or in the places we discover during our time in the military or college and the workplace, the cherished memories of a sacred habitat leaves an indelible impression so strong that its power resonates throughout their lives.

Discovering the perfect terroir is a rare occurrence; they seldom come to us effortlessly, and often we are required to change or depart to find the right answers to what we shall become. Hence, we are always in search of the perfect place — a haven that liberates us from mundane concerns in the way it liberated Matisse. Our determination never wavers as we pursue that evanescent feeling of immortality known as success. However, terroir can also manifest as a state of mind, an intangible essence. This is part of the mystery and allure of terroir.

So, let’s uncover the secrets of terroir and embark on a journey to discover our unique place in the world. Let’s find the environments, communities, and experiences that bring out the best in us. By embracing their power, we unlock a world of endless possibilities and speed our way onto the path to greatness.

In Once Upon a Terroir: The Stories of Remarkable People and The Transformative Power of Place,” we invite you to venture alongside us into the enchanting narratives of individuals and the places that shaped their exceptional lives.

Our mission is to do for the concept of human terroir what Henri Matisse accomplished for the artistic terroir. His journey to Collioure not only liberated his paintbrush but also his soul.

After extensive research and conducting in-depth interviews with over 50 remarkable individuals, including Nobel Prize winners, Four Star Generals, billionaire business tycoons, Heads of State, and TV news anchors, we have uncovered the five transformative elements that had a profound impact on their lives, much like the impact experienced by Matisse. Our aim was to uncover the fundamental principles that shape the path to success, examining the influence of family, institutions, community, as well as the habits and behaviors that guide these exceptional individuals.

These individuals, like Matisse, went through periods of confusion and dissatisfaction until they discovered the perfect terroir that forever changed their trajectory. Just as terroir bestows indescribable qualities upon grapes, creating exceptional wine, certain places resonate deeply within our souls, leaving an everlasting imprint on our character and propelling us towards audacious and seemingly impossible dreams. Before finding their ideal terroir, they saw their potential through a glass darkly, but afterward, they gained a clear vision of their path. Each story ignited a spark, urging us to embark on a journey of self-discovery and transformation.

Within the pages of this book, we unravel the intricate interplay between individuals and terroir — the very essence of their surroundings that unlocks true potential. We identify five success dimensions, which we will introduce later, that distinguish ordinary lives from extraordinary ones. While there is no definitive hierarchy, the patterns were consistent across all our subjects, offering a new chapter in the science of success. The narratives serve as a testament to the power of place, illustrating how the right environment can shape identities and lead us to extraordinary achievements.

Please join us as we uncover the tales of individuals whose lives were forever changed by the transformative power of places that include their upbringing, where they fought wars, pursued education, fostered innovation, created art, made fortunes, found love, raised families, and countless other life-enhancing habitats. What unites these stories is that the journey of transformation is always anchored in a place. May these narratives awaken our awareness of the terroir inspires our quest for greatness.

Part 1: The Terroir Effect — From Serendipity to Revolution

Drawing inspiration from the unique terroir of Languedoc-Roussillon, exemplified by the great Henri Matisse, we embark on a captivating voyage alongside an aspiring artist not yet attuned to the greatness within but who stumbles upon the perfect terroir. Our story begins in Collioure during a period of disruption when his fortunes were meager, and his art remained unrecognized. We delve into the rich history, tracing back to Louis XIV and the construction of the magnificent canal that breathed life into Languedoc. From there, we witness the Vigneron Rebellion of 1907, which birthed an audacious leader who paved the way for a groundbreaking movement.

Part 2: The Terroir’s Embrace — Cultivating Greatness

Through the vivid accounts of remarkable individuals, we witness the power of terroir to nurture unique talents, including those most unlikely to succeed. From the canyons of Wall Street to the mountains of the Sonoran Desert, from the flat waters of Nebraska to the rain-soaked cotton fields of Jim Crow Georgia, we explore the stunning vistas to the bleak landscapes that kindled the creative fires within, propelling an individual to remarkable heights. By understanding the profound connection between the place and each person, we gain insights into how a terroir breeds the cultural DNA to unlock our most incredible talents.

Part 3: Unearthing the Essence — The Scent of Transformation

As we delved deeper, we discovered the intricate types of terroirs — the bleak as well as the beautiful — by examining the rich histories, cultural nuances, and natural landscapes that shaped their journeys against mounting obstacles. We witnessed terroir’s transformative power extending beyond physical boundaries into a tapestry of experiences, memories, and aspirations. In our minds, they intertwine to create a unique path toward fulfillment and accomplishment. Armed with this knowledge, we can navigate the landscapes of our own lives to change our terroir when it no longer reinforces our values or our dreams to seek fresh habitats in which to immerse ourselves.

Part IV: The Terroir Within — Unlocking the Power of Self-Discovery

In the final chapter, we reflect on the profound impact of terroir and its ability to shape the inner landscape. We discover that searching for the perfect terroir is not merely a quest for a physical place but also an exploration of self-realization. Even those whose natural terroirs weren’t as idyllic or supportive as they needed found the ability to recreate or reimagine a terroir that worked in their lives. We saw this in lives beset by divorce, substance abuse, racism, and poverty. If the terroir isn’t working, find one that does. If you can’t do that right now, imagine it, then make it real. By embracing the terroir within, we unlock the potential that lies dormant and create extraordinary stories of transformation.
